My child is a freshman in smacs, they Are hardworking, organized, and smart. It takes 4 hours a night maybe more…depending on their other classes.it works out that when they dohave a lot of hw it’s bc all the teachers assign stuff due on the same night. It’s crazy. Those posters who say there Child has no or very to little homework must be either lying or their kid is crazy smart and doesn’t even need to attend school.
For an average smart kid it will be a LOT of hw….extracurriculars take a back seat big time big! Don’t be fooled. Last year, when I talked to people everyone said the same thing only a little hw…so I wanted to come on here and tell people the truth. It’s a lot of work, it’s stressful and the teachers don’t really do there jobs in terms of teaching and giving massive amounts of material/hw…..leaving the burden to learn on the students.

It's just an optional class that some who wish to push themselves opt into.

Pp here. No. It replaces the 3 semester pre calc (alg 2/trig + pre calc) in 2 semesters. So it's intense.

So should a freshman/9th grader even consider functions? My kid loves math and is good at it but terrible with time management. We are still working on that. How do parents help with time management? Do you all micromanagement and how much of it is too much?

My junior has never had a study all. I would say on average 1.5-2 hours a night, but 10th grade magnet math was tough and at times more than that.

My kid is fantastic in math, but we decided that Functions would take too much time. It probably does take a couple hours a night (maybe not 7 days a week), and at least it did that first week or two, when we were deciding. So, if you take out Functions, for a kid who is really good in all classes and also very efficient, I think an hour or two of homework a night. He manages to do a lot of other stuff (music, theater, volunteering) and also spend a lot of time hanging out with us on the couch.

Other than functions what kind of homework are they getting? Can you give an example of a typical week of homework?

4 hours per night?

It involves about as much homework as all the other classes combined. It's a rigorous course for kids who want to be challenged.

It depends on classes. I'd say 1-3 hours depending on exam/project schedule. If taking Functions, add another 2-3 hours depending on the problem set! (There was one trig problem that was so deep, it even stumped my dad who has a MA in math).

It's normally about an hour or so from what I can tell. A lot can get done in study hall after 8th period. Kid gets home a little after 5PM and typically knocks out whatever still need to be done right away. Kid is great with their time management, so I've never been compelled to ask. Much better organized than I am

I’m sure you are going to get SMACS parents who will let you know from personal experience how much homework their kids are doing. But based on my own child’s experience in accelerated settings (CES, TPMS), that number is going vary wildly depending on the kid. Some kids are perfectionists and some are not. Sone kids have a hard time settling into an assignment and some do not. Some kids are easy memorizers and/or get stuff intuitively and some do not. (Etc.)
