My son goes there. We are in MD. Most kids from here do Risk and Insurance (business school) or sports and event mgmt (hospitality school). We get in state for those 2 degrees.

We were definitely hit up by Christian groups when we were there (we are catholic and my son went to Catholic private)

His roommate was from SC and his mom said to me she was glad her son wasn’t rooming with the more conservative South Carolina boys.

He hears the n word on the regular.

Frats are based on where you are from. For example. He wanted the same frat as his roommate but he is from Md so they said no chance. He ended up not joining a md frat … he would have just ended up with Gonzaga/prep/st John’s/GC kids he already knows)

You know your kid, it could go either way. For my don it just solidified that “these people really exist”.


OToH, he loves the weather. He golfs with friends a few times a week. Like all schools some teachers are great/some are not.

Lots of football, girl’s basketball is big time, Spring is a little more laid back, lots of opportunities to do a semester abroad.

What is his faith tradition? There is some really hard core Christian proselytizing at USC. So there are 2 camps, the fraternities and the missionaries, that kids have to navigate between. My husband, who’s is from SC, describes them as Scylla and Charybdis.

Columbia is so ugly and characterless. Also, there is such a rich white vs. lower income not white division. (I know most cities are like this but it seems like there is much more complacency about the stark divide there.)

Jeez people. I would be concerned if my child went to Brown or Berkeley and the influence those schools would have on my kid too.

The purpose of this whole forum is to learn more about colleges and the experiences at them. Is it enmeshment to post on here?

It s not just about conservative politics. It’s about the 4 years my kid is going to spend at a school, where I, going to enable the choice by paying $150k+

I’m going to allow him to make his own decisions. To a point. I’m not paying or supporting certain things, like a for profit university, and I want to go in eyes wide open. That’s all.

Some people seek to avoid what they consider progressive campuses and some seek to avoid what they consider conservative campuses. It's fine

It is creepy. And the fact you don't see that trying to engineer you child's politics is wrong is the problem. Let them decide who they are and what will make them happy. They have the live the next four years. Not you.

My friend's son is there in the business program and honors program. He loves it. UNC had been his first choice and he had the option of a guaranteed 2nd yr transfer there and went to UofSC expecting to do that but ultimately liked it so much that he decided to stay (being a lot cheaper than UNC for a VA family is definitely a plus!)

Anyone with kids or any recent experience at this school? I just learned that they offer in state tuition if you hit certain GPA and SAT levels that my kid has. Also, their business program is pretty strong. There’s a chance my kid is also in range for recruitment or walk on in their sport.

We are in VA so looking at in state schools there too but, any recent experience would be helpful.
