No. Regular bio and chem at TJ is like AP in base school. The AP classes are taught at a post AP level.
Do TJ students that enroll in the "Regular bio and chem" classes take the AP bio/AP chem tests at the end of the school year? Also, are these classes out of 5.0 for WGPA purposes? If no to either question, that would be unfair to those students, right?

Yes you really need to take summer classes to make it work well. We did PE the summer before 9th and that was useful too.

Just the opposite - TJ has less room in the schedule. Students take Design and Tech their first year instead of History 1, and thus have to fit in a social studies course somewhere. They are also required to take a year of computer science as one of their electives.
My understanding is that many (if not most) TJ students take courses over the summer to free up spots in their school-year schedule.
The orchestra program understands that taking music courses exacerbates what is already a tight schedule for TJ students, and provides guidance about how to fit music into one's schedule:

Subject: Question about classes at TJ
At most high schools, the core classes and music and a foreign language leave no room for any electives, unless they take PE over the summer. Is TJ the same or does the class schedule have more room?
