You're going to want the 2 rooms when it comes to bathrooms. FIVE people sharing a shower is hard. But five sharing a sink and toilet? OP do the right thing so you guys will enjoy your trip more.

What about interconnecting rooms? We always do this, then everyone sleeps well. One room for 5 seems awful

Being a family of 5 does make the room situation a whole ordeal to travel. I often like to do VRBO or Airbnb for more room for this reason.

I don’t always book 2 rooms, although sometimes I do, and sometimes I find hotels that can take 5 or some other set up.

I stay at hotels with large rooms (suites) and use the pullout couch and bring blow up beds. I book us as only 4 people. They don’t care about extra little ones.

Why is it the right thing to do? This isn’t like an airline where paying to sit together is a courtesy to the whole plan

When they were little like yours I would book for 4 people. As they got older we booked two rooms.

+1 I grew up in a family of 5 and we always got one room. Two girls shared one bed, the boy got a roll-away cot or pull out sofa.

With a 3 year old I just wouldn’t tell them. Most hotels offer virtual check in and you basically never interact with anyone.

I book two because we do NOT sleep in one! Kids 10/5/2. We get adjoining rooms when booking hotels. But we mostly do house rentals now because it's so cramped.

I have three kids who are 7/5/3 and no hotels want to let me book a double queen. It is so annoying because honestly even if we HAD two rooms we'd all sleep in one! Unless they are connected I guess but its not like I'm letting the kids sleep across the hallway alone, and I don't want to split up Dh and I on a vacay.

What do people do? I'm thinking of just booking the one room and smuggling the 3 year old up?
