It -CAN- cause damage but usually does not. I have multiple holes in my ears with a gun (even the old school spring gun types), as do my friends, my daugther, etc. and it's been FINE. Especially if it is a lobe piercing, not a cartilage one.

If you're in NoVA, we had wonderful experiences (more than once) with The Piercing Nurse. She'll come to your home and makes it a fun experience.

We had a good experience at Red Octopus. They will only pierce with a needle for children 10+.

I didn’t want to go to a tattoo parlor but knew Claire’s wasn’t great, so I took DD to Studs which I discovered while traveling in Boston. They have several locations across the country.

We went to piercing pagoda at fair oaks mall for first one and Craig pokes you for second and both of us preferred piercing pagoda.

Look up a reputable tattoo place and do it there. I did mine at the mall in claires as a kid and actually them repierced when my daughter did hers because mine had closed up after infections (I don't think related to the piercing but an allergy I have).
It was night and DAY. Seriously it didn't even hurt. No gun. It was kind of scarier FEELING because instead of pastel colors and unicorns you're in a tattoo parlor with some large tattooed man sizing you up but the quality of the piercing and the lack of pain etc was just like, incredibly improved.
