When my SIL died unexpectedly at 48 her spouse purchased two burial plots adjacent to each other. Now, ten years later he is remarried and doesn't know what to do with the plot. So he is trying to sell it to his ex-MIL who is broker than broke and can't afford to pay the cost to be buried next to her daughter. So, this is why I've always said, No burial plot for me. Cremation all the way! Avoids unnecessary expense and drama.

No, but DH knows I want to be cremated and which columbarium I think is nice if they don’t want my ashes to keep my survivors company. I also (jokingly) told my daughter (late teens) that she has my permission to turn me into a diamond but only if she promises to wear me all the time so we can be BFFs forever. I think I’ll wind up in the columbarium rather than jewelry.

So, my dad's family has been buried for a few generations in a small cemetery with distant relatives and other families who settled/grew up in our village. My parents are buried there as well as one of my siblings.

DH's father's family is buried in the Jewish section of a cemetery in a small Midwestern city. His mother's family is buried similarly in small southern city. His parents will be buried in his father's hometown.

I've been thinking about this for a bit as DH and I now live in a different region of the country than our families. I've appreciated visiting my parents' burial plots as we did with them when we were kids (when Memorial Day was for WWI, not barbecues). Probably cremate and spread ashes at a spot cherished by our family of four.

My late husband was cremated and we have a memorial bench in the park near where we spread his ashes. I plan to have my own ashes spread there (in hopefully 40 years or so). So, no cemetery plot.

In theory my husband and I have a spot in the middle of nowhere smack middle of the country, in his family plot. We've never lived there and neither of us want to be buried. We would never have told his grandmother that, but she has passed on now so it's not secret.
