We sometimes fly to Zurich and take the train to Italy.

Having the same experience looking at flights to Munich in July.
Three times what I expected.

I’m convinced flights from Dulles and BWI are more expensive than Philly, Newark, and JFK.
As a family of 6, we routinely fly out of other cities. The savings are significant.
I’m sure you can find some random airline with a stop or two for less. But don’t check your luggage.

4/2 - 4/9 on United is $1,197 round-trip going DCA-EWR-FCO.
Yes, the direct flight is $2k due to demand.

Yep, that's what I paid last year for that same flight (in June).

We ended up not booking, but I looked for fares to Italy back in late October/early November. Back then, they were around 1,200-1,300 or so. I’m not surprised it’s closer to 2k now. I’m also looking at the summer and that’s also closer to 1,800-2,000 as well. Expensive for sure!

Unsurprising, OP, given the travel date and destination.
Also, millions of Chinese are jumping on planes right now. Expect famous tourist locations to be MOBBED.

For lower price, you need to look beyond nonstop

Is this the week before or after Easter? If so, that is a very crowded and expensive time to fly to Rome

There was some chatter on flyertalk that United’s prices seem high right now.
If you want to save money you can check connecting flights like Aer Lingus or SAS.

We have not travelled internatinally since the pandemic and I'm in sticker shock....is 2k economy RT Rome just the reality right now for early April travel? For a family of 4 this is quite a cost! I was looking at United direct IAD to FCO (we have a huge credit from COVID cancelled trip)...but we'd land anywhere in Italy and grab trains to our destinations (travelling light and with 2 teenages who can bob and weave easily). Any ideas? thanks!
