I’m not sure if this is allowed or not. I was asking my son a question, and he told me he couldn’t respond because he was told to put the phone away. Teachers allows them to respond to messages and all. They won’t do anything in class, they are lucky I’m
Not complaining to the principal.

Was the sub at Heritage?

DS had issues with a sub there this week. The sub threatened to take his phone even after DS explained it was used to monitor his blood sugar, he wasn't texting he was making an entry note. Even other students had to chime in and tell the sub to leave him alone.

This situation did warrant a complaint call to the principal...again. This is the THIRD time this year that he's been hassled by a sub.

Please don't roll your eyes at the sub in this situation. They are told so many stories all day every day that it's hard for them to know what's real or not. I'd be directing my annoyance at the school leadership who is not giving the sub the appropriate information

Totally agree. This has nothing to do with the subs, and everything to do with them not being given important information pertinent to specific students. The VAST majority of kids with their phones in class have them for no good reason. Ie, like OP's kid.

Yep, not to mention that pp's kid could totally be abusing the "but I need my phone for my diabetes" schtick. Doesn't mean the kid doesn't have a real need for the phone, but that could be quite easily abused.

+1000

There is no reason this should have happened three times. It’s a problem that should be anticipated and avoided in advance.

Our LCPS middle school and high school both do not allow phones during class. Yours shouldn't either OP. THAT's what I'd be complaining about.

Phones should be put away for the day. If the kids can’t do that, the teachers should do it for them.

Sounds like your kid has a good teacher for a sub. They actually care if the kids are listening and learning and are trying to engage them. Hope you send them a tank you note. Also, don’t text your kid at school.

Call the main office and have them send any emergency message to your kid, just like back in my day.

Why are you distracting your son while they are at school?

Try homeschool until you’re ready to cut the cord.

Do you think that kids should be allowed to have phones in class? No, they don't. They are going to be fine without phones. If a teacher asks them to put the phones away and they don't do it, what should a teacher do? Just spend the entire class time asking?

I am a substitute and let me tell you the phone situation is out of control. I have no idea why you'd be concerned that your son was told to put away their phones.

It was likely an empty threat by an overwhelmed substitute with rowdy kids. Calm down OP, and you're really over the top for even entertaining "complaining to the principal."
