Just went through something similar. Kids have as many days to make up work as they were out sick. If a test or assignment was due the first day of an absence, they could be asked to make it up their first day back (though you could push back if you wanted to).

Especially at the end of the semester, teachers are crazy busy with all of the kids submitting late work and finalizing grades and all of that. It's probably just a clerical error. The earlier you can point out the problem (pleasantly, directly to teacher), the better.

Someone mentioned the 0% vs 50%. I think this varies across schools/teachers. I've had teachers put in the 0% to make it clear that the assignment is missing (not poorly done) and then they change the 0s to 50% at the end of the semester.

If the teacher pushes back, then you can go to either the resource teacher for the dept or to the counselor, who will most likely just help you navigate the situation (tell you the rules and make a suggestion about who else to contact) and not take direct action. But this is a helpful resource because they know the teachers and their proclivities and such.

If it doesn't make a difference in final grade, let it go. The individual grades don't matter after the semester is over.

At this point, If it affects letter grade, talk about grade change. Teachers have a lot of students, and have difficulty keeping track of who is out sick

Yes, it can be corrected if Thursday was not the deadline, but it would be completely fair if the teacher deducted 10% since your DS should have turned it in on Thursday. If Thursday was the deadline, it might not be fixable.

He's been out sick with COVID (and yes he's completely vaxed). I thought at excused absence meant he had to make up work when he got back to school. We just moved here, so I'm not completely familiar with the school system.

Your son should be able to get a 50% at least. I thought to give a 0 a teacher had to make contact with the student and parent about the missing assignment.

When my kid had their wisdom teeth out, most of their teachers didn’t have assignments available ahead of time. Still had to do makeup work after it was posted online. Several assignments were based on classwork on the days they missed.
