Yes, he checks out with her and anyone else who acts weird and inappropriate, including our kids.

I wish I could do this with my mom because she will talk at me for 30 minutes about stuff she’d never want me to repeat to my husband. But unfortunately she talks at me in her native tongue so it would be pointless and she usually wants to hang up if she knows my husband is in the same room.

My DH also does this! I find it so odd because he doesn’t do it with anyone else but she does tend to talk more at him than with him so I guess this is his solution? I figure as long as it doesn’t bother either party live and let live…

It is rude if the other person does not want to be heard by the other people in the conversation or hasn’t been notified of who else is listening in.

I don’t know why this would be rude. If the other side is having trouble hearing or wants to discuss something confidentially, then they should be taken off speaker. Otherwise, I don’t see what difference it makes, other than enabling longer, more comfortable conversations.

It is the only way I communicate on the phone with one family member. I also make sure never to be alone with them in person. They behave much differently when there are witnesses to their actions and words.

I used to think this was kind of rude, because she always seems a little put off by it, especially the way he does it. He just changes it to speaker phone, and then starts working on his computer and doesn't really make any conversation with her while the kids are all screaming and running around. But now I'm starting to realize that there's a reason for it. She just gets less weird when she's on speaker phone and less inclined to talk on and on about some weird thing.

Anyone else do this on purpose?
