Completely agree. Intelligence has very little to do with it. Connections, opportunities, and sometimes willing to lay down your values factor in as well.

I think OP’s premise is actually debatable, not a fact that needs to be explained.

Not quite the same… but explaining to people that being from Denmark doesn’t make you “Dutch”. People make this mistake all. the. time.

Not so much explaining but I’m from a different European country and every time someone hears me speak of the first time they tell me how they lived their in college, were based there in the army, have an Aunt who lives there etc etc……. I have to listen to be polite but I just don’t care…..

That's so odd to me that you think that something that you were born with ("natural intelligence") is a marker of success. Not that you have to explain it! I know you're sick of that.

The things I am sick of having to explain are why I don't have a full-time job and my weird dietary restrictions.

That's true. Work ethic is important too.
