I do have a child with SNs. I have never heard of a parent required to be at school with a student so I am curious why they were not there. Also I know that FCPS gives me the runaround on everything and that is why we follow all the directions in the IEP.


Exactly, parents asking to attend is a behavior issue. Juvi for this kid asap

No, IDEA did not cause the school shooting. GUNS caused the school shooting. The FAILURE to implement IDEA correctly caused this child to be in general ed without the 1:1 he clearly needed.

Harsh discipline *does not help* kids with aggression problems. Especially very young children who clearly have something developmental going on. Harsh discipline (such as suspension & expulsion) does have a role for older kids. But not 6 year olds.

I hate lumping all these students as special needs. There needs to be different categories - category 1 with kids who have special needs that cause them to have negative behavior and category 2 with kids with special needs that only affect them academically but not behaviorally. Can we stop calling both groups kids with special needs? They are vastly different


This is a cop out, child wasn't special needs, very violent behavior learned from at home

Not necessarily. Most crappy parents would never agree to attend school with their child everyday. I’m not even sure that’s legal to require that.

For a child with special needs, the school district can not require a parent to attend class if this is not what is required for all students.
If the child's needs are so significant that the only way the child can be in the classroom is that they have a parent - it sound like the child should have had a 1 on 1 aid

There needs to be an IDEA exception to violent behavior. I can't believe we evacuate classrooms while a child is destroying the room and pay no mind to the psychology damage we are doing to regular students.

Getting rid of a student who has issues that a school is incapable of dealing with has been around longer than Biden. DD's school had a boy prone to violence and it took him attacking a first grader for them to finally force him out

Schools are clearly overwhelmed with the number of children who need additional supports. I don’t think this helps schools address discipline issues across student populations. They need the flexibility to address each child’s needs- this seems to further tie their hands. I doubt the funding referenced in the article is enough for every school in the country. Thoughts?
