Are there any decent tankless water heaters yet?

I LOVE the tankless water heater that is in our house. Made by Noritz, I think. It's a new build house from a mass builder, so we didn't have any choice on the water heater, but we've been in the house for a couple of years and I'm very happy with it. We always have hot water - never run out (I like LONG showers). Also, more energy efficient so spending less $ on gas bills than we did in our old house (comparing summer usage, so not factoring in heating costs, just the water heater.)

Do you have any problems with hot water if one or more are showering while the washing machine and dishwasher are on at the same time?

plenty of decent tankless, as long as your design and use case is good. tankless should not have long plumbing runs, or else you get into the hot/cold cycling problem. if your bathrooms/showers are on the other side of the house from your water heater, you may have problems. also with a single tankless you probably won't be able to run more than two showers at once.

I'm looking at replacing a water heater and have received a few quotes. This seems to be an easy install but is there any reason to not just pick the lowest quote? Is there any reason to pay an extra $400 to $600?

A little high, but I’m also thinking of pre-Covid prices. Probably right in line with average at this point.

Pre-pandemic I paid $500 for the 50 gallon gas water heater and $800 for my plumber to install. If you go with a well known company with a lot of overhead, you are going to get hosed. Also, most people who are hand could do it themselves.

It’s a little in the high side. We paid $2400 3.5 years ago for a 50 gallon with booster valves and moderate flue work to meet current code. I bought the pan myself at Home Depot.

That looks high but not outrageous

I’m shocked that they are charging you for the pan, but maybe gas is different than electric…

I got two estimates of around $2500 last June, so maybe prices have gone up since then.

Are you installing it yourself?

Get a tankless! A little but more, but lasts twice as long.

Seems a little high. I was recently quoted 2k, but maybe yours estimate includes a higher-quality unit?

Is 3k right? For a new water heater
2662.00
307 tank
Flue 277
Pan 103
Co monitor 73(already have one so don’t need)
