ID4 is tax credit eligible. Per IRS website:

Model Year Vehicle Description Applicable MSRP Limit
2023 Volkswagen ID.4 $55,000
2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Pro $55,000
2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Pro S $55,000
2023 Volkswagen ID.4 S $55,000
2023 Volkswagen ID.4 AWD Pro $80,000
2023 Volkswagen ID.4 AWD Pro S $80,000

Rockville Ourisman Audi said they would only do the tax credit if we leased the car. So we walked. Totally annoyed.

The dealer doesn’t give you the tax credit, the IRS does the following year when you file your taxes. Starting in 2024, for the first time ever, they will start allowing dealers to give credit directly. They can give it to you via the lease because they are buying the car for themselves and can extend it to you.

Right, the dealer may have said they would only give the credit via the lease as an attempt to push the lease -- and still have been technically correct. But you can claim the tax credit on your return yourself, you just don't get it until the following year's tax filing season.

Well since you said so on DCUM that must make it so!

We bought in the second half of December and and found a few at MSRP. Yes, most were AWD Pro S. We love the car. You should have no issue buying the 2023 at msrp. The leasing for tax credit applies to 2022. that’s the only way you can get tax credit for the 22 model as they were manufactured in Germany.

I have no idea what that means. Other than refusing to sell you one with a VIN that meets the assembly requirements it isn't up to or in the control of the dealership to "give you" the tax credit.

Rockville Ourisman is the worst. Don't ever go there.

You can order directly from VW and avoid markups entirely. A year ago delivery was taking 6 months, though, don't know if that's changed.

The challenge right now is that only the most expensive trim level is available. The Pro S AWD. If you went to the VW website the first week of January, you could have reserved the model you wanted at the MSRP. But not anymore. It is all through the dealerships and they are marking up $$$$

I haven't bought one. Check out Truecar.com. They have good regionally accurate intel on what people are paying for specific cars and trims. In the case of the ID4 it looks like the FWD versions are selling below MSRP, while the AWD versions are selling at or above MSRP.

Has anyone bought and ID4 recently? How much did you pay? Did you pay MSRP? Higher? Lower?

I'm looking to buy one soon and wondering if it is worth it to try to haggle the price down.
