You're both right, obviously, but I think the OP is just having a fun debate and isn't actually having to fight off somebody literally taking away her sandwich (or isn't going to take away somebody else's).

This. It wouldn't be my bread of choice (and I like rye), but it's really up to the person eating the sandwich. If they like it, go for it. If they don't, don't.

I don't think it sounds so bad. As a kid, we often had rye bread in the house, and I bet I ate PB&J on it just fine.

Grilled cheese on rye is better, though.

God no.

I would eat it in desperation if it was light rye with NO caraway seeds, but I know that some people don't even that rye.

I know I'll be in the minority for this, but to me the best bread for pb and j is either basic grocery-store style wheat bread (no rough seeds or anything). Alternatively, if you're using something like Skippy, the best bread is grocery-store white.

If you like it, enjoy! If I went to your house and you said "I'm making PBJ sandwiches" and you gave me something on rye, I would eat it very politely and then you would become "the PBJ on rye lady" to me every time you were out of earshot for the rest of your life.

I'd say white bread for a PBJ, but a soft wheat could be fine. Nothing fancy.
