OP: I would recommend starting with a neighborhood list serve if you have one. There is Care.com - I've had mixed experience with quality of folks there. For nanny share, there is a separate DCUM forum. Agree in this market part time might be harder, so if in your budget might be worth coughing up for full time to get better quality care as many of the more professional nannies want full time work. There are agencies like White House Nannies that off load the search process for you, but you pay for that. No personal experience with them.

Found our first nanny through our neighborhood listserv. She turned out to be not a good fit in spite of the fact that her previous employer said she was great.

We found our second nanny through our neighbors, who were very sad to see her go but were putting their child in daycare. She's been wonderful.

In general, listservs, word of mouth, and agencies are the way to go. I agree with others that it would be difficult to find someone willing to start at part time.

Or, you can look for a PT babysitter while you are ready for a full time nanny.

We paid ours full time even with working part time for the first month. Created good will and all. We used an agency. Some use word of mouth, an agency or Care.com.

We found our beloved nanny when I had my first child in 2011 and had a very rough recovery (unplanned c-section). I asked a friend of mine, Sue, if she knew any babysitters as I needed someone to watch the baby while I pumped and my spouse was returning to work. Our nanny had taking care of Sue's close friends' 3 kids for 6 years or so and happened to be looking for full time work. The nanny agreed to help me out for a little while as she was searching for a FT job only b/c she was friends with my friend. Once we met, we really liked one another. We decided shortly thereafter to hire her full time once I returned to the office in late January (it was mid-November when she came to our house). We gradually increased her hours (initially it was 4, then 6 and then 7 (she went overseas over the holidays), and then when I returned to the office she came on full time. She even turned down a higher paying job with another family that needed lots of help (both private law firm attorneys), b/c she wanted more time with her family and clicked with us better. We got a call from my office day care that they had a spot for us in February, but since we liked our nanny so much we stayed with her. It's been 4 years since we parted ways, and we are still very close with her and her family.

Obviously, this was all very good luck for everyone involved, but this is how we found our beloved nanny, who is still like a grandmother to my two kids.

Recruit from another industry like a waitress or retail if their customer service was great. Waitresses can work quite well around your schedule if you only need part time.

We had a lot of luck with neighborhood listservs. If you post your neighborhood, someone here at DCUM should be able to send you a link. That's a great place to find a nanny share buddy, and often people will post a thing for their nanny when they no longer need her. That's how we got ours and she's phenomenal.

You might also find a nanny share buddy who is already part of the way into a nanny search, so good to look for both simultaneously.
