The SAT is not an intelligence test like an IQ test.

There's a correlation.

Looking to guide my kid who is exceptionally average intelligence but great work ethic and grades/ AP classes.

All 3 of my kids are "exceptionally average" if you look at standardized tests alone. They had initial PSAT scores around 1000 but greatly improved with test prep.

They go to Emory, Boston College and Northeastern.

What were their final scores?

They switched to ACT and raised scores to 33, 34 and 32

there's no such thing as "exceptionally average"

that's just a total nonsense.

For us washington college in chestertown md was a pleasant surprise, my son also liked Hobart, and Drexel which has really upped its campus game since back in the day. I also know many people who went to sewanee who got an amazing education/experience

He should find the school that is the best fit, not necessarily the best ranked.
That said, an extracurricular or two that he's passionate about and can hold a leadership position in can make an otherwise average application stand out.

OP, why do you think your child with great work ethic, grades, and APs is average? That sounds like an incredibly accomplished young person to me.

My kid is extraordinarily kind and empathetic. He is an average student - straight Bs, SAT 1100. That is average (and fine, and he is going to be a good man).

You deserve advice for your child’s situation, I just think you may want to reframe things for clarity (and to reframe your child’s accomplishments for your and his sake).
