I wouldn’t get a permit for this. But I suppose we like to live on the edge… most of the improvements we’ve made were either partially permitted or not permitted at all.

Just be aware that it is not a safe bet to perform unpermitted work; don't trust that the city won't catch you. (Now, if you were out there carjacking, that is a different matter. You are probably safe from consequences in that case... But I digress.)

I guess the difference is that DC collects revenue from permits. If they could figure out a way to tax carjacking I am sure they will be very efficient about responding to that too.

Exactly. If it will only take 1-2 days then there would be no time for a stop work order if there was a call and a permit was needed.

I don't know the specifics on garage doors in DC (and you should post this in the Home Improvement Forum) but in DC at least a decent number of like replacement items don't require permits so you are probably ok without one but anytime you are putting something new in in DC you should definitely get a permit.

Why would you need a permit to repair/replace a garage door? I wouldn’t bother and it sounds like inviting hell upon yourself if you do.

I want to get my roll up garage door replaced - it is unclear from my review of DOB resources whether or not it is required to get a permit. I had a contractor come out and give me an estimate and he said something along the lines of "I don't recommend getting a permit." What's the consequence of not obtaining a permit? It's for freestanding garage door, not an actual garage structure, by the way.
