My kid did Bio in 9th and AP Bio in 11th only because that was a particular area of interest (and potential college major). By doing the course in 11th, he had evidence of good grades/good AP score for course in his potential major for college apps, as well as a teacher rec from that teacher. (They get to know them well in a double period!)

That's a great point. Thanks for pointing that out.

The double periods are there to allow time to finish all of the required lab work in those AP courses...

It's totally fine to have the gaps -- as long as your kid is prepared to work hard (depending on the teacher).

My DS did Hon. Bio and Hon. Chem in 9th, AP Physics 1 in 10th, AP Physics C in 11th, and AP Chem in 12th with no issues. (He didn't take AP Bio). He didn't have any issues in Chem not having had it since 9th. I'm sure your kid will be fine in either AP Chem or AP Bio in 12th.

What if I kid does not know what she wants. So for example, she takes Hon Bio 9th. Hon Chem 10th. AP Physics in 11th. In 12th, is it not so great to do AP Chem double period or AP Bio double period because of gap years between the original course?

At our school there wasn't a choice between one or two periods. AP Bio was two periods, period. Since they wanted to do AP Bio, my STEM kids took it.

Wondering what is the difference between the double period science and single period science classes? Is there just labs whereas the single period does not. Do STEM kids normally take the double period versus the single period?

At our HS, there are double periods for AP Chemistry and AP Biology.
