I change every 6 months OR when the indicator light comes on (but who knows how accurate that is, because I swear I accidently hit the button the other day and reset it).
As for where to buy, I look up the model number of the refrigerator online and usually purchase from Amazon. We have a Kenmore fridge, it was in the house when we moved in earlier this year, and I think it took a Whirlpool replacement filter because Whirlpool probably manufacturers this particular Kenmore fridge.
