No, you're good. If the spout was the wrong length, you wouldn't be able to install it at all. Leaky spouts are due to either:
1. Leaky diverter valve (broken seal or cracked inner threads).
2. Hard water build-up.
Changing the spout should do it, but if you have really hard water, you could look into a whole house softener.
