The problem with someone who has dementia is you don’t have anyway of knowing if they work well, are too loud etc. a good audiologist —I like potomac audiology can test and adjust sounds and will likely attend to your parent more than someone at Costco would.

Pp here (hit send too soon). Also, I'd talk to the audiologist about hearing aids that are, I guess, easier for people with dementia/limited dexterity. My dad currently has those tiny, in ear ones with different settings and he is CONSTANTLY having issues with them.

He doesn't have the hand capabilities to get them in well, they fall out, he plays with the settings and renders them useless (he has Parkinsons and related dementia). He is going to the VA soon (I just got him in) for new ones and I am going with him and will ask for simple ones, hopefully over ear ones (harder to lose). Hopefully they have 'plug and play' ones for folks like our dads LOL

There are hearing aid clips/lanyard things available to help prevent loss. Google them-not expensive or obtrusive.

I am going to do that for my dad when he gets his new aids soon.

At some point he may not be able to wear them due to the dementia but I'd go to costco.

No. There really aren’t any substitutes unless you want to get him an ear trumpet

My 89 year old father has dementia and moderate to severe hearing loss. He had hearing aids from Costco for over 10 years but he “lost” then one by one. He walks with a walker and his dementia underestimates his ability to be mobile. My mother and father live independently (but with around the clock help) in a retirement complex that has audiologist. Their recommendation was like $4500-$6500 for new hearing aids. Since getting him there does not require driving him, that is preferred. But the concern is he will just lose them. They include insurance for one loss although still a charge. Meanwhile Costco would be half the price but getting there for exam and checkups would be very difficult. Plus he could lose them. He doesn’t want to spend the money but my brother and I think his cognitive decline and depression will only worsen with his limited hearing. Whatever life enjoyment there is for him is severely affected by it.

I was wondering if using iPhone air pods or headphones would work. The headphones he can’t lose at the least. I heard that they can work as hearing enhancers.
Appearance matters little.

His ability to handle the small hearing aids is a concern. I bought him a new iPhone at his insistence but he could not operate it and got frustrated and suddenly it was lost. Fortunately it had enough power that I could do a findme and it was buried in cabinet.

Any success in alternatives to conventional hearing aids for dementia affected older people?
