You make your schedule on the courses/grades you have now. If you end up taking and passing the summer school class, your schedule can be adjusted before school starts. But many kids plan to take classes to get ahead in MS and HS and then don't follow through. They won't make your schedule based on what you plan to do.

Here is a previous SS catalog which will give you a good idea of the MS/HS offerings: https://www.apsva.us/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/SS-Catalog2020-noST-full-3.2.2020.pdf

This is not accurate for APS. Plenty of HS students take PE or Econ over the summer either between 9-1(PE) or 10-11(Econ). Those taking PE10, for example, don't have to list PE10 on their sophomore course request form. The counselor gives a list to the registrar and they put you in the virtual summer class.

These classes aren't remediation. They are to open up elective slots or free periods in their regular schedule.

They are virtual classes that aren't through APS summer school though. Summer school is remediation.

I think it’s slightly different at the middle school/high school level. Definitely invitation only in elementary.

And it's really behind, like 2 grade levels behind in reading and/or math.

It used to be for anyone, but it switched a few years ago to only kids needing extra help. I think the invitations go out in March?

Is summer school just for kids who are behind grade level in APS? Or can anyone opt in?
