I am a teacher within PGCPS. If he did not do well, then please reach out to the teacher to request a conference. Ask her what the results mean for your child, what can you do at home, what specific areas does he need to work on, what interventions are in place at school that could help him, etc.

It was first given in 2015 to all kindergarteners but soon changed to a sample of kids it seems.
I don’t know how it’s given in MCPS— random sample?

At our MCPS school it's given to all K kids.

Correct - this year all kindergarteners in MD had to take it rather than a random sample from each class. I agree that it takes too much time during the first month of school when we're trying to get to know the kids and help them adjust to being in class all day. The data isn't used by staff to make any instructional decisions contrary to what the state might say.

This is generally correct. 2015 it was given to all mcps kindergarteners. 2016-18 or 19 it was given to a random sampling (about 3 kids in a class of 24 from my experience). To be perfectly honest, i have blocked out fall 2020 so I don’t remember. I believe we started giving it to everyone again last year (21). Any other K teachers, please correct me if I am incorrect.

Correcting myself, 2014 was the first year. 2015-18 or 19 was a sample.

yes, we just received results.
it is meaningless as k teachers are adept at figuring out within the first week of school who is “ready” for k.
kra is more about rating the preschool programs children attended prior to k. in other words, it is a meaningless assessment that takes way too much time away from children during the crucial first month of kindergarten.

OP- thanks for explaining.

It seems like the report gages whether your child is ready for kindergarten and how you can, based on the score, help prepare the child if they are not. I’m confused why I am getting results now and why the test isn’t completed prior to placing a child in kindergarten. Did the teachers also just now get the results? Are these tests results used by the teacher/school in any way?

If your child wasn't in HeadStart or PEP, then there was no way to access them for this test beforehand. Moreover, kids aren't really "placed" in kindergarten in the United States - they are enrolled because they are the appropriate age.

Did your child have some issues on the test? Some need for remediation? What exactly is upsetting you here?

OP here. Nothing is upsetting me and I don't see that I said that I was upset. I am just trying to understand what the test is for and how the results are used. I understand that you can't access kids to see if they are ready for kindergarten before they enroll, so since this test is offered after enrollment and results come out mid-semester, I wanted to know what the purpose is. Does it simply guide teachers and parents on how to approach the rest of the year?
