Look at lab rescue if you want a lab or retriever. You may need to put some effort into finding the right dog thru a rescue. If you want to go the breeder route make sure you meet both parents. See where the dogs live, etc. do not buy from a store or online breeder. All breeders are doing it for the money whether they are puppy mills or nor, so keep that in mind when paying thousands for a dog when there are so many euthanized daily.,

We didn’t want to jump through a lot of hoops or wait too long, so we gave in and paid $3500 for our designer dog. No regrets, though. He’s great.

It has become more difficult to adopt dogs. We adopted our last dog in 2013 with no issues but waited for over a year for another dog last year. We finally just bought a Lab puppy this fall. Labs are great dogs and are cheaper than goldens.

Yeah way too hard to avoid pits at shelters. After what happened to that family in Tennessee I just wouldn't consider it. Way too many stories like that.

You may have success if you are willing to adopt a senior dog, but that does come with its own challenges.

Op - yes we are looking at homeward trails, wolf trap, lucky dog and some in DC.

Some shelters have meet and greets at local pet stores on weekends, like PetSmart. Find those and you’ll have many options.

It can take a while, OP. I know it's very frustrating though. I adopted a dog in October after a few months of looking for the right dog for me. Rescues sometimes didn't respond. Keep trying- there is an adoptable dog that will be a great fit for your family.
Just a side note- friends of mine bought a GR puppy 2 years ago. She was very hard to train and now, at age 2.5, she's much more manageable. YMMV.

If you aren’t ok with any percentage pit bull you need to buy a dog from a breeder. Nearly all rescues have some amount of pit in them and you have no way to tell that without running a dna test.

We are having a hard time finding the right dog to adopt. We have young kids and am trying avoid a pit Bull or any sort of pit mix. We found a few we love and put in applications but haven’t gotten any accepted.

I had put in feelers for a golden retriever puppy but it is $4000! We just got contacted there are puppies available. What would you do? Wait for a rescue or buy a dog now?
