Subject: can i get an excused absence for 2 days of educational travel?
Stop by a French university and call it a college visit... excused for juniors and seniors.
FYI that there is a potential implication for an unexcused absence, though it is rarely enforced. Teachers don't have to allow you to make up work if unexcused...
If it were me, I simply wouldn't call in and if the kid reported (upon return) that a teacher was playing hard ball on making up assignments, I would call in a mental health absence retrospectively.

+1 It really doesn’t matter anymore. Just send an email and save it in the rare case someone would look into why your child has several absences.
Why save the email unless you’ve somehow been able to get it excused? In what situation would it be helpful?

+1 It really doesn’t matter anymore. Just send an email and save it in the rare case someone would look into why your child has several absences.

No. Its excused for valid reasons only (illness etc). Vacations and sports competitions are not excused.
