I think you will find the X3 too small especially if you want to grow into it. The motor is nice though. You can even look at a CPO X5M if you want all the powers or a X5 xDrive 45e if you value more efficiency.

I just went through this and looked at multiple options and ended up with Porsche Cayenne. The Macan GTS was a great drive if you don’t need that much space but I chose the Cayenne for the new redesign, size, and updated interior. I’ve owned a few BMWs and maintained them religiously. However the new BMWs just have a lot going on service wise and they aren’t even fun to drive anymore.

Lexus is a Toyota brand? Most Lexus vehicles, especially the SUV’s, are repackaged Toyota CUV/SUV’s - the GX470 in particular, which is a Landcruiser with a different grill.

The LX is the Land Cruiser, not the GX. The GX is based on the LC Prado, a completely different truck.

If you are buying a family car and expect it to last 5+ years, get one with a third row.

If you are planning to have a third child, none of these cars will be good family cars, someone will need to drive a minivan. With 2 kids it will be fine, though.

Absolutely not. I have 4 kids and would rather walk than drive a mini van. Most of my friends have 3 or 4 kids and not a single one has a mini van

He said he was a car guy who valued driving dynamics. The antithesis of a Lexus RX.

Specifically, I've had a Lexus RX350 and an X5. Outside of size, some of the price range, and relative "luxury" level, there's really no comparing the two.

What's your top priority? If it's long-term reliability/longevity, get the Lexus (bonus: it takes regular fuel, or at least it used to when I had one). If it's driving dynamics/driver experience/performance, get the X5...the RX doesn't come anywhere close to it.

If you get the X5, buy a certified pre-owned 2020 or newer. I just did a quick AutoTrader search and there are several options well within your budget, but you have to zoom out to a 100-mile radius.

I'd also test-drive the RX350, Acura MDX, maybe the Audi Q7, maybe the Volvo XC-90...and the sleeper of fun SUVs, the Mazda CX-9 (although next year it's being replaced by the new 6-cyl hybrid CX-90). The CX-9 was actually my second choice behind the X5.

The CX-9 Signature is a really amazing car for the price.

DW currently drives a Honda accord and I drive a bmw coupe. We’re planning to sell my coupe and buy a SUV of some sort to get something family friendly. We have one toddler now and a baby “in the works”. I’m familiar with the bmw X5 and like the handling/tech but would like to go test drive a few other options. We would be buying and keeping it for a while. Not a 3 year lease so some reliability is preferable. I’m also a car guy. Driving dynamics are important to me I so don’t want a boat. Budget is less than 65k.
