It's all relative. If they decrease the range of an A they will also simply make the test scale so it's exactly the same. None of this matters.

They do. Most transcripts have a key on the bottom that states the scale. Moreover, the admissions office has copies of the course catalogs, which include grading info.

I was in a school system that used eight point scales so 93-100 A, 85-92 B, 77-85 C, 70-77 D, but it looks like as of 2023 they've switched to ten points. I had always assumed colleges knew what scale schools used when people apply.

OP, it does not really matter what other school systems are doing since the tests and curriculums are different. Colleges know this. Colleges know that MCPS counts almost all classes taken by college bound kids as a 5 too. They get an info sheet from the HS that shows the breakdown of GPAs for the seniors.

Some school systems have grading scales with pluses and minuses. So 92.5 - 97.6 is A, 89.5 - 92.5 is A- etc . . . It gives a little advantage to kids who otherwise would have a - and a little disadvantage when you might otherwise have a +. The GPA comes out about the same.

A is 90-100, and yes 89.5 rounds up to 90.

Unweighted GPA uses a 4-point scale, but Weighted GPA uses 5-point scale.
