The easier to maintain ones will be sold in grocery stores, etc; the speciality ones that can require some know-how will be at your better plant nurseries. American Plant often has a nice selection. A florist will sell highly decorative ones.

Trader Joe's is a decent source of orchids for a good price. As a gift, I'd put in a nice ceramic pot with moss or small stones as top dressing and maybe switch out the plastic tie with raffia or something for a nice presentation.

I own many orchids and they are mostly from grocery stores. My trader goes orchids are still going strong 8 years later.

If you’re looking for a regular phalaenopsis orchid then the grocery store is fine. I saw lots of nice orchids at Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods and Costco this week.
