There are elementary magnet programs for 4th and 5th grades, and then another set of magnet programs for middle school. In recent years, admission to the magnets has been by lottery. Every kid who scores over a certain threshold on a specific standardized test is entered into the lottery. Some people think this is good, and some think it is bad, but the point is that it will absolutely impact GS scores. Up until now, many schools saw their best test takers leave after 3rd grade, but the GS rankings are based on tests only administered in 3rd - 5th. As more schools hang onto good test takers, you are going to see the scores sort of level out a little.

Dang. “ones silver spring” got me nothing useful.

Silver Spring can many anything from pretty rural areas to suburbs to really urban. Where do you plan to live? How comfortable are you with racial, ethnic, economic, and political diversity? Will your child want/need access to a wide variety of after school clubs or other activities?

My kids went through the ES magnet at TPES. Both were in CES; one was at the new local CES at PBES. Both went through the TPMS STEM magnet, which was great because of the local set aside of 25 seats. It prepares them for the Blair STEM magnet, where my oldest is now. The youngest is still at TPMS magnet. Felt this was great since both kids had enriched learning throughout their years in public this far.

I would add East Silver Spring. We know lots of people who love it, and it has good PTA. We are in Takoma Park next door and were pleased with our TP schools (also ESS feeds into Takoma Park middle). The one SS school that does not get much praise here or from friends I know, is Eastern. Partly because the building is old but also, I have heard the non magnet classes are not great, and a few friends have had issues with admin (like 4-5 years ago).

Very positive experience at Sligo Creek & would be glad to answer any specific questions you have.

Our kids loved French Immersion at SSIMS.

New to the area and trying to better understand the Silver Spring area... Thoughts on the different ES options? Ones you love or hate? Trying not to focus on GS rating only. My kids are little so really only focused on ES and maybe MS as we could move for HS. Hoping for not a school so giant my kids are lost in the shuffle. But also need to be close-ish to the city where I work.
