What do you consider “better” weather in a lower cost area? Also have you considered thh HB at if I move to a lower cost area I would get paid less? Also I live in a city and don’t have a car. In some other place I might need one which is a big cost with ongoing costs.

My mid thirties son and DIL will probably never own a home -- until I die and he inherits my home. They have lower paying jobs and have never saved enough for a down payment.

A lot of people live beautiful, rich home lives without owning a home. But of that's your dream, then move to a lower cost of living area and buy a home. Live in a tiny house. Scale your dream to fit what you can attain.

If your jobs are not high paying (and it sounds like they aren't), have you considered relocating? There are plenty of perfectly nice places, with amenities comparable to or better than DC, which are much more affordable (and may even have better weather).

I am on the fence over whether I’m sad about it. I’ve been a renter most of my life. I couldn’t afford to buy a SFH or townhouse in this area or anywhere else I wanted to live. I’ve lived in both crappy and marvelous rentals. I’ve also lived in a house my parents owned that was a nightmare of upkeep. Twice I almost bought condos, but the condo fees scared me off. I know the value financially of home ownership but like another poster, I can feel at home in a rental. Two of my children inherited a family house and are each the heir of other relatives’ houses. DH is a bit frustrated that I don’t want to live in his small home town in the Deep South when we are both retired, but now I have really complex medical needs and need to live near excellent hospitals. As a result, we’ll never own a primary residence.

Why no way forward? Do you mean any home or a home/location you can only dream of?

Over here. I’ll also never retire and will have to work until I die. I actually wouldn’t mind the apartment thing if I lived in a less shitty one, but rent control means I’m stuck.

I have lived in many many apartments over the past 20 years and finally am in my own home. It doesn’t feel more “homey” than my rentals. I have had to pay to fix so many things and it never ends. I know you feel sad, but focus on enjoying your place and knowing that you don’t have to stay there forever! It’s hokey, but home is where the heart is.
