It's not going to happen. Once you freeze the onions they will stop producing the gas that causes tearing and is also causing bubbles in the plastic wrap/bag.

That’s the point. If the gas bothers OP, she has another option.

This seems normal, but if it’s bothering you maybe consider using a mandolin or a food processor.

When you cut onions, it gives off a combination of enzymes and acid that makes the gas that makes you cry/tear. If they cut the onions and package them, then the gas is released inside the plastic wrap. There is some space inside the wrap to fill first, but left long enough, it will continue to produce the gas to a certain point. Additionally, the gas expands given time.

If you brought them home and put it on the counter, it would do the same thing. If you cut the onions yourself and put them in plastic wrap or a ziploc bag, it would do the same thing. Totally normal.

I’ve purchased from Safeway and Harris teeter and experienced the same issues with air forming in the package. Is this bacteria? It doesn’t happen until I’ve refrigerated at home and I am able to squeeze air out of the packaging but I buy chopped as I struggle with cutting whole onions due to how MS impacts my hands.
