I love ordering from this bakery. It’s too late for this year, but they sell nut rolls, poppyseed rolls, and nut horn cookies that are very much like traditional Hungarian treats. Everything they sell is shipped fresh and well packaged. They also put a new spin on some of the traditional treats. Their raspberry walnut kolachi are addictive.

Zingermans-Michigan and hungariandeli-LA? There are bricks and mortar stores selling the products from maybe northern MD up through PA-western NJ to NY. Why? Destination area for Aistro Hungarian empire immigrants back in the days of Ellis Island. Lots of eastern Europeans.

So sometimes Wegmans in that Phila to NYC market area has carried nutrolls and kiffles supplied by small businesses. Never had buttermaids. We received a baked goods product [not this type] and it was stale and yuck. We never have recieved stale and yuck from Kiffle Kitchen or Oh Danish bakery [makes those kringles sold at Trader Joes]. Do to popular demand and excess consumption by friends of DC's years ago I learned to make kiffles and nutroll.

Another possibility is strudel which is known as rétes in Hungary. The Little Austria bakery in Sterling makes it. https://www.little-austria.com/

The pastry traditions of Hungary overlap some with Austria's (a result of the Austro-Hungarian empire).

I get Hungarian paprika cream /paste at the German Gourmet.

You could also try Heidelberg Bakery in North Arlington - German but I think they have other treats as well.

Non-Hungarian here, but I would like to gift a Hungarian coworker some candy, chocolates, pastries, and the like. She is not allowed to eat smoked meats so sausages are out of the question. She has not been back to her country in two decades so anything traditional/potentially nostalgic is great. Does anyone in NoVa have a go-to place for these? Thanks!
