That's what I find too, OP. Banks don't like to do transactions with you if you are not a member. Maybe stores might do that for you when you are buying something. But, I wouldn't try to do it with more than a few hundred dollars.

True, but the OP didn’t specify beyond “smaller” and “larger”. I imagine that banks will be more enthusiastic about changing $20s to $100s vs changing $1s and $5s to $100s.

It is far safer to for the bank to change $1s and $5s. Nobody is counterfeiting small bills.

Can you open a simple savings account at a local bank? I used to have old bank accounts and just needed to keep $20 or so to keep it open.

Anyone have a solution?

Thanks!

Open an account at a near by bank, deposit the cash, withdraw choosing $100 bills.

I have walked into a TD branch and done the bill exchanges. It's never been a problem. You can also try a grocery store or gas station, often times they get big bills and would be willing to trade them out.

Are you talking thousands of 1 dollar bills? I agree that most banks would do this. You might need to make more than one trip though, and exchange the bills in smaller batches, and go to a bank with a teller window for businesses if possible.

Most banks should do it. If not, go to the post office and get a money order in your name in exchange for smaller notes. Mail it into your bank account or deposit it online.
