There are 5 special classes in the elementary grades: art, dance, drama, music, and phys ed. Each day students take a special. In middle school the students choose a “major.”

I am a parent at their sister school. As another poster mentioned, they truly explore all of the Arts from dance, musical instruments, tech, visual, music, etc. it’s amazing how talented the children are. Keep in mind that this is a creative and performing arts school so they do not have an emphasis on TAG or SPED. Their TAG problem is close to nonexistent and lacks a challenge. They’re SPED, you have to stay on top of them to help your child. If your child does not do well academically, they won’t make it to tying out for the Arts in middle school there.

I have one kid at Pullen and one at Judith Hoyer- I’m a huge booster for both schools.

Pullen is less diverse than Hoyer but it is not an issue, at least not for my kids who are Middle Eastern background. In my experience, socially, it’s not a problem to be a white minority in a POC majority, it’s a problem to be a POC in a white majority.

At elementary level Dora Kennedy French Immersion, Chavez Spanish Immersion, TAG (Heather Hills, Glenarden Woods, Capitol Heights), Goddard and Hoyer Montessori... This is just a quick look and not comprehensive. Great Schools lists student demographics.

Not sure if this is something you care about but there isn't a ton of diversity at the school compared to other PGCPS specialty programs. Student body is 85% black, 9% Hispanic and 2% white.
If you are white, your kid may be the only white kid in his or her class or in the grade.

I personally don't care but I know that some folks do and it can cause social issues.

Friend has a first grader at Pullen and she loves the school. Great communication, they actually teach the curriculum, no excessive homework, true arts integration. Transportation can be challenging but the school does an excellent job of notifying when there are delays in the afternoon.

Any parents with kids at Pullen? What do you like or dislike about the school?
Any regrets in choosing Pullen?
