+1. And +1 to the Aubrey-Maturin series, too. Dunnett and O'Brian are my two favorites,
very different from each other, but absolutely top of the list for historical fiction written in the 20th century.
Another suggestion: if you've never read The Three Musketeers, it's WONDERFUL. 19th-c. historical fiction about the 17th c. It's a great romp. Dumas is a good choice for fans of Dunnett and vice-versa.
