Schipol is one of the worst airports for security and check-in times. People will give themselves four or five hours to clear through. We’re still missing flights this summer and fall. There is a snowballs chance in hell I would leave the airport. Other locations, yes, but Amsterdam, absolutely not. It’s so bad that, our last flight back, we decided to fly into Brussels and then drive up to the Netherlands only to avoid having to use that airport.

Winter travel is different than summer. Things have really calmed down again now. No craziness at European airports.

I agree that Schipol is a nice airport. There is a small museum and some good cafes. Not your typical airport restaurants. There is a very nice service if you want to rent a shower and clean up. I would not leave the airport.

NP - we will have 7 ht layover in 2 weeks and have been hoping to go into city, maybe do 1hr boat cruise, and come back. This is disappointing to hear.

I wouldn't do it. Schiphol is a pretty nice airport (despite their baggage disasters and long security lines) so not a bad place to kill time. Plus if you leave the airport you will still have to lug around your carry ons.

It’s going to be maybe 45-60 minutes for you to leave the airport and then you’ll have to be back 2 hours before the flight, at the latest. That leaves 3 hours. Take away transportation time to get to the city and back. If you are happy with an hour in the city, do it.

Terrible idea. Just get breakfast inside the terminal and be grateful you have enough layover that if your connecting flight is late, you'll still make it on to the next one.

So you have 6 hours? Will you have to clear immigration/customs to leave the airport? Then train into the city (30-45 min, so 60-90 minutes round trip), then back two hours before your flight to go back through security? That's hardly any time.

Haven’t been to Amsterdam, so know knowledge regarding this, but it sounds very rushed. Also, wouldn’t you have to go through customs/immigration? That would make it even more rushed. I would just relax at the airport.

The family has a layover in Amsterdam, our flight arrived early morning. I read the train goes into center city. Is it enough time to eat breakfast, take a few pictures, and possibly go to a coffee house and be back at the airport for a 1 pm flight
