You should look at MD, it gets rural faster to the east and south of DC, a d the commute less congested.

If a small town feel and horse zoning are the most important things Poolsville MD would work

Brookesville is another option.

+1 for Middleburg. The commute will be miserable though

Middleburg is your answer. Commuter buses exist but you'll give up 3+ hours of your day to the commute, so a couple of days a week would be pretty draining.

Must be nice to farm off your kid to the care of others so you don’t have to think about schools.

Waterford. Very few have to commute, though.

Middleburg, Upperville, etc. The commute to DC is not going to be reasonable from any exburb.

Looking at a potential relocation to DC and am searching for homes/land in exurban DC, preferably in a community with large acreage and with a mild farming/equestrian community. Would commute to DC a couple times a week, preferably within a reasonable commute. A conservative leaning community would be preferred, and school zones/boundaries would not be an issue as DC attends boarding school. Very flexible budget, TIA and happy holidays!
