I am a cheapskate about cars and enjoy driving old cars. But there have been some real safety improvements in the last 20 years, starting in about 2011, when most cars were equipped with stability control, and then again in 2018 or so, when lane-assist and smart cruise control mostly became standard features.
Agreed - the safety features alone are reason enough to buy a new(er) car. In OP's case, I would get a new car because OP clearly drives them for a long time and said they don't have a lot of income right now. Given that, and the facts that used cars are very close in price right now to new ones AND new cars are under warranty so OP would not have to worry about repairs for a few years, a new car makes sense.

I’ve had two Hondas that I’ve each driven for 20 years. I’m now 10 years into a Toyota. I buy reliable cars and keep them. Only sold the first two because the safety improvements of the new cars.
