We are discussing utilitarian SUVs. Not a vast difference between BMW, Audi and MB unless you are looking at higher performance variants such as AMG and M. Each have a turbocharged 2.0 liter ICE engine as a base model with similar horsepower/torque.

Volvo and MB generally skew toward driving comfort, with Volvo having really great seats, but Volvo infotainment is clunky and behind the curve. BMW skews toward handling and performance. Audi sits the difference. You need to test drive each and see what works for you. Lots of variants at play depending on wheel/tire sizes and types and even seat materials with BMW Merino leather being superior to Vernasca leather in terms of comfort, but the faux Sensatec being more comfortable than the Vernasca.

Don’t overlook Acura, which has very competitive near luxury models, or the Genesis GV70/80 models. Both can be had better equipped for less than the Euros.

One of the biggest issues is how comfortable you are with the way the infotainment systems function. Are there still buttons and knobs to control climate and radio or do you need to click through touchscreens?

It might be helpful to share if you’re considering a Q3/X1/GLA, Q5/X3/GLC, Q7/X5/GLE or Q8/X7/GLS. All are at various stages of refresh and new models.

Volvos are not necessarily inherently safer at this point but there are plenty of online ratings available from NHTSA, IIHS and NCAP.

to add, the performance and tech are all pretty much the same, I am not a fan of the audi's tech and performance is behind.

Have you seen the redesign? The giant double grill? Front end heavy? I was getting an X5 until I saw that it would soon be outdated due to the redesign. And I think you need to go pretty high up in the Audi models to get a really excellent driver. Lower levels seem very ordinary.

I would dive into reliability on the Volvo. I think they used to be more reliable than they are now.

I have driven both BMWs and Mercedes. I prefer BMW (had 3) to Mercedes (had 2), but Mercedes has a smoother ride, IMO.

Which models are you comparing?

Why not Audi? Mercedes is trash for old people who think they know what good cars are. It's like the lexus of european cars. BMWs are great to drive but they ruined the front end on most of them (wait until next redesign cycle)

I recently bought a Volvo XC60 and love it. Replaced an Acura so not one of your other choices. Dh has a Mercedes sedan and I don’t think it is anything special tbh.

I have a volvo fir that same reason.. I love driving it, its comfy plus no snooty factor. BUTTT Mercedes are very quite and smooth. I think when I am a silver haired old lady.. im just gonna go for it bit right now with 3 kids, Volvo station wagon it is!

Volvo is a Chinese company now, so I would have doubts about their long term reliability and truth in safety testing.

I hear you. But as I am approaching 50 I think it is time to get snooty so I will likely get the Mercedes.

I dont understand the question. If you want a safe and not snooby car -- get a honda.

My thoughts are you should choose the car that fits your budget and you like. Cars are very personal choices, including your tolerance for cost, repairs, etc. Those are legitimate factors. What people think of you due to the car you drive is not a legitimate factor.
