Subject: New cars and the upcharge
I bought a new Honda recently and was shocked (but not really, I guess considering the demand) to discover this. My ex-husband is a manager at a high-volume Honda so I typically always go through him for cars. When I was talking to him about this one, I was so confused when he said he wasn't even going to charge me extra. Then I saw the enormous credit for this fee and understood. It's awful.

I have been looking for new cars for a while and following forums to find dealers that don't charge MSRP etc and this is apparently the new thing dealers are doing to say they aren't charging a dealer markup. Basically customers are frustrated at the markup so they now add "services" that you don't want and are totally overpriced. Apparently some of the warehouses (might not be the right word- but basically the regional ports where the cars come in before being distributed to dealers) are also doing the same thing for another layer of markup. Things like window tinting etc that have already been done so they say you can't remove them.

Safford Hyundai in Springfield only charges MSRP -- no upcharges. Shop around OP, there are decent dealerships out there.

Suggest you go onto a site like Leasehacker and check out the forums. There are reputable reps who broker new car transactions without the markup. Right now there is a guy with hundreds of reviews who can get Toyotas for MSRP and sometimes less, of course it depends which model. No I do not know this person but have interacted with them and read the reviews. Car dealers charging MSRP plus 5k are not ones I would purchase from.

I have not found this at Hyundai.
In MD Fitzgerald Hyundai has been great.
Every single car company does what you describe. It is called Dealer markups not upcharges. And have always done this. It is your job as a consumer to see the window sticker of any car you are buying .
Some put more crap on the cars than others.
And right now Darcars in MD is charging not only what you just wrote but a $5,000 to $7,000 actual upcharge without any extra equipment.

If you call around the other dealerships are up charging 5-10k. It’s ridiculous and they don’t realize that it may bring money in temporarily but consumers are pissed and it’s going to ruin their long term reputation
