I like this workbook just so my son has more practice doing algebra calculations. Like he is doing simultaneous linear equations solving by graphing, substitution and adding/subtracting them at school and this book walks you through the steps then has plenty of practice problems. The answers are in the back and you write in the book. It’s only $15 so totally worth it.

If you want something relatively lightweight, Key To Algebra.

If you want something more hardcore, Dolciani, especially the older editions.

If you want something for a student who has a *lot* of math talent, AoPS Introduction to Algebra.

I recommend the free online textbook of big ideas math. Great examples and practice problems.

My kids's school has a "low homework" policy so it seems like they don't get but one or two problems of each type. This is a middle school and in no way does the rigor seem like high school. I have a lot of doubt about them being prepared for Algebra 2 which will be a high school class, so I have them do the Khan Academy Algebra 1 curriculum after school. I don't normally want to burden them with extra work after school but since they have no homework, they have plenty of time.

I would just buy a used textbook and use the problem sets for practice. The book will explain the topic and usually has at least some of the answers in the back to check your work.

This is our experience as well. No homework? Why not?

I've started writing one or two additional problems similar to the classwork problems that DC is doing. If DC needs more, then I'll look for something in the new year.

DC is in Algebra 1 and despite the no homework policy in middle school really does need to spend some extra time at home reviewing concepts. The teacher has unofficially acknowledged that a high school level course needs extra studying but the system won't let them say that or encourage extra studying. The teacher has links to a variety of apps on the iPad but more often than not DC gets distracted by You Tube or other games that the school system lets them access.

I want to go old school and have on hand a good workbook to offer up for extra practice at home without the distractions of technology. Has anyone purchased one and if so what would you recommend? Amazon reviews seem all over the map so I'd appreciate first-hand experience.
