Can you tell me more about YAA day camp? Is it just focused on the production or is there instruction in technique as well? Also, I think they meet on the weekends - how did your kids feel about that?

We didn’t care for imagination Stage (cliquey group of girls) but I think it may just have been the other campers.

Same. We've liked the Holy Cross camp because it was just enough for a beginner and still good challenges as my DD has gotten older.

Ovations has summer camp and programs throughout the year. They are in Gaithersburg. They put on a couple of plays throughout the year. Your kid would be in the Jr company.

It's been a few years, but I think they get a side ahead of time and then turn up to a group audition and perform their pieces in front of the others. I didn't find competition particularly stiff at that age, but it is arguably one of the best programs in the region.

Ironically enough, I actually found imagination stage to have some of the nicest kids. I'm not refuting the prior posters experience, just noting that it wasn't the experience of my kid.

Stagedoor Manor is a famous sleepaway camp for drama. Also Interlochen in MI has great programs. Locally you could do Theatre Lab, YAA, and maybe Levine if they are offering a specific teen theatre camp.

My DD liked Camp Shakespeare but LOVED Traveling Players and we've been there for a few years now. The shows are great and the teachers are super warm and supportive

Here's a list of these kinds of camps in the DC area. But remember there are also plenty of sleep away camps up and down the East coast that have for years, accommodated these kinds of interests.

Imagination stage is good. I’ve always wanted my kids to do the Shakespeare theater camp which looks like a ton of fun but they haven’t done it.

My DD (12) just finished her first play and LOVED it. She's taking drama at school, and already talking very excitedly about the Spring Musical. Any recommendations for a good theater camp? Day or sleepaway is fine, but we don't want to travel too far for sleepaway.
