If Height is close enough to you that would be a good choice. If Stevens is close enough to downtown that also doesn't have a boundary.

Definitely look at the community based options on myschooldc--they run their own lotteries so if you get a terrible draw in MSDC you still have a chance, and there are many in/near Columbia Heights.

Half of Columbia Heights is zoned to Raymond. It really shouldn’t impact commute. They are at Meyer during renovation, but will be in a much nicer building than Tubman the next school year.

And next year is supposedly Tubman’s past before renovation.

You'll almost certainly get Tubman. And Meridian. So stop worrying.

Thomson ES - almost fully cleared its waiting list. also just look at a map and list a lot of schools after Tubman #1

If you're willing to expand your geographic reach, there are more options. You could get into any KIPP or Friendship Armstrong school. Probably Meridian. Definitely Shining Stars Montessori. Wheatley and Browne, Noyes.

People have told you all of the schools you can get into between Columbia Heights and downtown. If your aim is to have a reasonable commute walking at the pace of a 3 year old, that's not a lot of schools. The only other one I can think of is KIPP Webb. You can put Cleveland and Langley and hope for the best, but it might not work out. It really just depends how many in-boundary kids and siblings there are ahead of you on the list.

Bear in mind that there's only so early you can drop the kid off-- not all schools have before-care. Will you have enough time to get downtown after?

As for the non-lottery schools, I dunno but sooner is always better. If there's a list you want to get on it.

We’re inbound for Tubman and want to do PK-3 there. We should prob get a slot, but I want to list some other schools just in case, as backups (we NEED free PK for childcare). We’d like something close or on our way downtown to work, so Columbia Heights or anything south towards downtown (we walk). Are there schools where we’d be essentially guaranteed a spot if it’s a big year and our lottery number is terrible?

I know there are some community options that don’t go through the lottery - can I just wait to talk to them if we’re shut out of Tubman or do I need to be proactive?

Thanks!
