Spouse is headed there next week - Saturday. He's in denial and says Mom is just tired. It's out of my hands and ridiculous that everyone is acting like she just is speaking slowly due tot her allergies. My aunt had strokes and TIAs - this sounds like that. The slurring is really pronounced.

If your spouse really cared he/she would go see her. Easy (& lazy) to arm chair quarterback it.

Yes. It could be a lot of things, including some very serious things — but trying to talk while your dentures are sliding around would definitely impact someone’s speech.

My aunt began to have speech problems at age 90. It was Parkinson's.

PP yes a huge chance she upped the drinking, which was always high. Last year was a hard year.

One of my aunts who has always been a bit of a drinker has been starting her day with wine and not stopping at all since retirement. Any chance she's upped the drinking?

Could it really be dentures not fitting properly? I jumped right to stroke.

Could be a lot of things from having had a small stroke to her dentures not fitting properly. You or your husband needs to go visit in person to see what's going on.

I hate to even say it but two relatives of mine started ALS journeys that way. Their speech was VERY slow and slurred...not just slightly off.

80 year old MIL is slurring and has very slow speech. She lives several hours away and when she calls we noticed this. We asked what was up and she and FIL say it’s her “sinuses and allergies”. It’s not likely and I assume a lie so they can justify driving! to Florida this winter and also going on a long cruise over Christmas. DH and his siblings aren’t concerned and says it’s just allergies. If my Mom sounded like that, I would rush her to the ER.

MIL is and always has been a heavy drinker - several drinks a day. Could this be affecting her brain differently now?
