I think they are talking about the neverending story that the dad imakes up and is telling the kids? OP here, and I loved that part, too. I really liked this book and was happy to see the thread pop up again.

The author is from Howard County, actually.
I tried to read another book of hers but didn't like it; didn't get very far.

I loved this book too. Just really beautifully written and delves into the complexities parents face.
