My guess is that they thought the thread was about JHU.

Our oldest is at JMU (STEM) loves it! Great professors, really good social experience - and our kid is not a partier, but that is definitely available for those who want that experience. Great resources, academically and otherwise (UREC, sports, food, etc.)
We have a freshman at Tech, also STEM, not engineering. Great school as well. Kid is excelling academically, doing mostly okay socially, but it is a big school and enough farther away that its location is a challenge. Breaks can be a challenge and definitely more lonely there than our older one is at JMU.

PP here ^^. Also wanted to mention I have another child at VT - non-stem, liberal arts. Another fantastic choice!

I've had three kids attend JMU and all loved it. It's a beautiful campus, lots of choices for majors, great faculty, and friendly, well-rounded students. Btw, there are MANY OOS students - a large % of my kids' friends, roommates, etc. were from OOS. Mine were humanities kids - History, International Affairs, Poli Sci. Great programs, wonderful study abroad opportunities, etc.

I highly recommend JMU for in-state OR OOS students.

My husband and I both graduated from JMU. We were both out of state students (from different northern states). We each had very different experiences (from chosen major to Greek/non Greek), but both of us loved our time there. My husband now hires graduates from JMU at his company and he finds the students to be the same as they were when we were there - friendly, hard-working and down to earth. Good luck to your daughter! (I also hear good things about VT, so it sounds like she is on the right track!)

We're not a Virgnia family, but my son really loved it when we visited recently. We'd actually been headed to Virginia Tech and decided to stop there on the way where it was surprise hit. My son is not a CS/STEM kid as an FYI.

For those of you with kids there or have some experience with the school, can you tell me your thoughts? Has it been a good experience? What is the social life like? How big are classes? Would it be hard from someone outside of Virginia to fit in? Anything else?
