If you can swing the cost, I'd recommend the 540i. It has the classic BMW straight-six engine and makes a ton of power (and sounds awesome, too). The current iteration of this engine - the B58 - is an outstanding engine. Great performance and solid reliability -- as long as you are diligent about maintenance.

I have driven BMWs with the 4-cylinder (that's the engine in the 530i) and the straight-six and there is really no comparison, IMO.

Thanks for your recommendation. It doesn’t look like there is a significant difference in mpg between 530i and 540i. This might be my last regular engine car before transitioning to electric cars. I want to have some fun driving. It looks like 540i is the right one for me..

Electric cars can be very fun to drive. I’m not even a car enthusiast but the torque on electric cars is genuinely a blast.

The 530 is a perfectly fine choice for 95%+ of drivers and has optional sports settings for steering, trans, suspension and engine if needed on occasion. Only you can make a decision based on test driving. Another option is the 530e.

If you've driven both, there is little comparison between the two engines -- and it is not all about 0-60.

Compared to other German brands, reliability is the lowest.

I thought that BMW 5 series are better than MB E class and Audi A6 in reliability. If I buy BMW 540i or 530i, I am likely to keep it long enough with >100k
Miles on it with good maintenance.

Just stay away from anything with the “hot-V” turbo V8’s. They are ticking time bombs. They slowly leak oil into the valley between the cylinders until eventually it catches fire.
