2 boys, 2nd and 5th grade.

Nighttime is a full shower with soap and they have to brush their hair after they towel dry it (thick straight hair that is an inch or two long on top).

Teeth brushing at night and in the morning is not negotiable.

I don't care if they brush their hair in the morning or not, it's up to them if they want bedhead or to style it but I have a misting spray bottle and a hairbrush in the powder room if they decide to do so before walking out the door.

Just an FYI the staff at your child's school do have a problem with kids who are not clean, who have bad breath, who smell bad, whose clothes are not clean, and whose hair is sticking up in every direction. If they know the home situation is sad they feel compassion and try to help if they can, but in relatively affluent schools districts there is only eye rolling exasperation and some sympathy for the poor neglected child. Pretty much nobody blames the child, it's all attributed to the neglectful parents.

So you can either teach and require your child to use basic hygiene or you must accept that most adults who spend time with this child blame you, not him.

Is it curly? Curly haired people don't brush dry hair. Did he wash it and comb it the night before? If so, its fine. How does it look OP?

Agree, if he doesn’t take care of his hair, then he has to cut it short. That’s what I tell my DD. Hygiene is not negotiable

I mean, I never ever brush my hair. I wear it curly so it doesn’t need brushing. No reason to brush it if it looks fine without it.

How old is this kid? If he’s little, yes, comb his hair. If he’s in upper elementary he’s probably looking at the older boys. My oldest is in high school and has longish hair that’s never combed. The messy head, looking like bed head style, is very in.

If he’s 5 or 6, comb the kids hair.

This is op. Sorry, mistype, l meant his hair is NEVER tangled. He brushes his teeth at night daily, but not all of the time in the morning.

Long haired boy in our house. If you want your hair long, you have to take care of it.
