DD will be getting hearing aids but her hearing loss is moderate. She does well at school but I don’t want to miss anything she may need down there road.

-Teacher calls on classmates by name so the student knows where to look
-Preferential seating includes being away from loud fans, etc
-On an IEP there would be self-advocacy goals

My son has a 504 plan for extra time and has:
Can turn in work up to a week late (because sometimes he doesn’t clearly hear the directions and needs the extra time to go back and ask the teacher)
Copies of notes
Can use an audio pen (livescribe)
Preferential seating and seating next to positive peer model (I can’t remember the exact wording but not next to a kid that hums or is talkative or makes noises because it makes it harder to hear.
Closed captioning turned on if available with any video shown in class.
Extra time on tests (sometimes he misheard a word or phrase orand it takes a while to figure out a word on the test is the same word that was heard in class).

I had hearing loss as a child. I remember a teacher moved me from the front row to a back row (I was a good student and I think he was trying to mix up things and place the worse students in the front). Anyway, I really needed to be in the front but was afraid to say so and say why. This was long before the days of 504’s. My (long in coming) point is: make sure you child feels comfortable (and empowered to) speaking up.

All assignments being written on the board in the same spot, each day. A very clear hand signal for “fire” and another for “active shooter “.

I have a meeting scheduled to discuss a 504 plan for my child with hearing loss. She is in middle school and this is the first time we are addressing this with the school. Other than preferential seating, is there anything I should ask for?
